Rev. James W. Burris was born in Gastonia, NC. He attended and graduated from Pleasant Ridge Elementary School and Highland Jr.- Sr. High School. He is married to  Olivia Lipscomb Burris and to this union God blessed them with three children, Gloria Emily, James Jr. and Adrienne Joy. They now have six grandchildren.

 In 1970 he was called into the ministry to preach God's word. He preached his first sermon October 24, 1971 at the Weeping Mary Baptist Church Bowling Green, SC, under the Pastorate of Rev. Samuel C. Jones. He was ordained on September 30, 1973 by the Sandy River Baptist Association Upper Division.

 Rev. Burris earned a Bachelor of Theology and a Bachelor of Divinity degree form the Teamer School of Religion, Charlotte, NC.  Reverend Burris also attended classes at  Friendship Jr. College in Rock Hill , SC.  

  He has received certificates in Pastoral Training, Church Administration in the Black Church along with others from the National Congress of Christian Education an auxiliary of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc.

 He has served as Second Vice Moderator of the Gaston County Missionary Baptist Association, Gastonia , NC . He currently serves as the Chairperson of the Crusade Committee.

 Pastor Burris has served as pastor of the following churches Weeping Mary Baptist Church, Bowling Green, SC, Boyd Friendship Baptist Church, Lake Wylie, SC and St. John Baptist Church, Sharon, SC.  Reverend Burris is currently serving as pastor of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Gastonia, NC. Where he has been blessed to be there now for eleven years

  Reverend Burris mission is to do the will of God and to exemplify the Word of God. He is committed to what God's word says in Matthew 28:19-20; to win souls to Christ and to bring people to a closer understanding and relationship with Jesus the Christ.

 He believes this can be done through the preaching, teaching of God's Holy Word and by example. Pastor Burris also believes in being involved in community affairs as well, because he wants to reach out and help the total man.
